Public Toilets (2)

In Ghana,

Among Ghanaians, it seems to be perfectly acceptable to urinate publicly --- men pretty much anaywhere, women more generally in rural ares than in towns --- a solution more likely perhaps to appeal to male travellers than females. To be sure of not offending anybody, it's a good idea to ask a local person of the same gender where you can urinate. Nobody will find this strange --- in my experience, Ghanaians are not all coy about this sort of thing (I've often asked for a toilet in a bar and been asked bluntly --- sometimes with graphic miming gestures --- whether I need to urinate or the other thing). What will creat total confusion is if you resort to euphemisms or more informal, slangy terms --- most Ghanaians will not know what is meant by a restroom or a piss!
