An old Arab lives close to New York City. He would love to plant potatoes in his garden, but he is old and weak. His son is in college in Paris, so the old man sends him an e- mail. "Beloved son, I am very sad, because I can't plant potatoes in my garden. I am sure if you were here you would help me dig up the garden."

The following day, the old man receives a response e-mail from his son at 3:45pm: "Beloved father, please don't touch the garden. It's there that I have hidden 'the THING'. Love, Ahmed".

At 4:02 pm, the US Army, the Marines, the Rangers, the Police, officers from the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the CIA, visit the house of the old man, take the whole garden apart, search every inch, but can't find anything. Disappointed they leave.

A day later, the old man receives another e-mail from his son: "Beloved father, I hope the garden is dug up by now and you can plant your potatoes. That's all I could do for you from here........ Love Ahmed.

图书馆开张

自己懒，好久没有更新blog了。看到些别人写的好文章，开了个新blog存档。

我所记得的日内瓦

在日内瓦的最后几天一直没有好好吃饭，总是胡乱找些东西搪塞了自己的肚子了事。最后一天我的胃实在无法忍受西餐了，强烈地渴望吃一点儿让自己觉得舒服的东西。于是我去到火车站旁边一家叫做“波计”的中餐馆，点了一份牛腩煲和一盘虾饺。即使在我的胃如此渴望中餐的时候，我也只能说那儿的中餐味道了了。结账前请waiter给添些茶水，打算在那里闲坐片刻。waiter来了句“成！”我好像已经多年没有听到“成！”了，觉得无比亲切。我问他是不是北京人，他说在那里呆过小十年。一个多月以后当我再回想日内瓦时，别的事情都很模糊了，只有这一句“成！”还清晰地印在脑海中。

另一段仍然记得的对话：也是在日内瓦的某一天，我去一家cafeteria吃晚饭，结账的时候cashier说：“%$□*#^%”法语啦，我自然是听不懂的。只好耸耸肩，告诉他说：“Sorry, I don't speak French.”于是cashier在一张小纸条上写下了价钱。这时候排在我后面的一位老先生说，“oh dear, you got to learn French. It is such a wonderful language!”“I know, but I think I am too old to pick up another language.”老先生和蔼地说：“oh no sweet heart, it won't be a problem to you. Even as old as I am, I can speak two languages ------ English and American.”:)

日内瓦这样一座名城在我的头脑中过了一个月以后就只剩了这三句半。

我怎么现在听起来象专业旅游，业余统计，或者更确切些，专业休假，业余上班的。:P

BTW，wave MM，有啥可以上载超过10MB文件的网站告诉我一声。:) box.net很好使，就是有文件大小限制。瓜儿的那些MTV都很大，动辄40MB，box.net是不行了，得换个地方。

罢工的结果

折腾了半天，终于给了个说法。从这个月起，俺每月的工资涨了50英镑。好多钱呀！

I am going to retire in 2 years! Oh, wait, maybe 7 ....

I got my P60 End of year certificate today. It is like the W2 form in US. I am so happy to find out my OFFICAL date of birth is 29 Feb., 1948. Since by law in UK, people could retire at age of 60 years, I will only need to work for two more years!!! What a great news!

After a second glance, I found that's too rush a conclusion I made. I am actually a male on the offical record of Inland Revenue Office. So I'd need to work for 7 more years. Well, that's not too bad comparing to what I have anticipated. I shall start to search for a nice place for retirement now. Not much time left for me.... Maybe a lovely small town on the sunny coast of Spain? hmmm...

新版小马过河

google来的续集

为了哄老婆睡觉，我翻出一本儿童故事。信手打开，见是“小马过河”。这个故事大家很熟，大意是说：

小马和他的妈妈住在小河边。马妈妈的工作是过河给河对岸的村子送粮食的时候。有一天，妈妈让小马帮她把粮食送到河对岸的村子里。小马驮着粮食来到小河。可是不知道河水有多深。张口一问，大牛说不深，才到小腿；小松鼠说很深，前几天还淹死个弟兄。小马只好回去问妈妈。妈妈让小马自己去试探一下河水有多深。小马小心地试探着地淌过了河。于是，小马明白了，河水既没老牛说的那么浅，也没有小松鼠说的那么深。只有自己亲自试过才知道。

故事讲到这里，我忽然想到，这个故事还应有个续集：

小马觉得，遇到犹豫不决的事情要尝试是个真理。有一天，他走到一座独木桥边，正准备过桥，但是觉得这座桥似乎有点烂，下面就是万丈深渊，可怎么办呢？这回，小松鼠过来告诉小马，这桥很结实的；可老牛却说，这桥一上去就会塌。小马想，那就再试试吧。于是，当他整个身子都踏上桥的时候，忽然，桥断了。小马向着深渊底部飞翔的时候，想：我尝试错了吗？

鲁莽和勇敢是亲兄弟。故事的续集虽然是我临时想出来的（如果有朋友已经见到有类似的续集，那纯属巧合哦），但是我觉得，只有加上了这一半，故事才算完整。如果说勇于尝试的确可以让人成功，但同时也可能使人粉身碎骨。

我恨那些只把话说一半的故事家们。

可我同时觉得，这样把话只说一半的情况实在是太多了。

王小波说一句话，大意是越是喊得斩钉截铁的话语越让人怀疑。这种怀疑应该很大程度上来源于这种话语背后的潜台词。为了寻找那些潜台词，我几乎成了一个怀疑论者，担上了诡辩的名声。诡辩就诡辩吧，我觉得诡辩总比不容置辩要真实些。可惜有时候，我觉得真的连诡辩都难。我这两天读到篇旧时的文章（《让河川为生命奔流》，《读书》杂志2005年第一期，推荐朋友们看一看），文章中把我原以为天经地义的水坝建设批驳得狗血喷头。我豁然心惊：我原来对水利的认识原来仅仅是故事的前一半啊！

讲故事讲一半，有的时候是因为无知，这时，上帝会笑；有时候是故意的，这时，人会哭。

小马过河

　　有一座小山旁边，住着一匹老马和一匹小马。小马整天跟着妈妈，从来不肯离开一步。
　　有一天，妈妈对小马说：
　　“宝宝，你现在已经是个大孩子了。你能帮助妈妈做点事吗？”
　　小马点了点头说：
　　“怎么不能呢！我可喜欢做事啦。”
　　妈妈听了，高兴地笑着说：
　　“宝宝真是好孩子。那么，你就把这袋麦子背到磨房里去吧。”
　　妈妈说着，就把一袋麦子放在小马的背上。
　　小马试了试，一点儿也不重。可是小马对妈妈说：
　　“妈妈，你跟我一块儿去好吗？”
　　妈妈说：
　　“怎么，妈妈要是能够跟你一块儿去，还要你帮什么忙呢？快点去吧，早点去早点回来，妈妈等着你吃饭。”
　　小马独个儿背着麦子向磨房走去。
　　从小马的家到磨房，要蹚过一条小河。小马走到小河边，看见河水挡在前面哗啦哗啦地响着，心里有点怕了。
　　“过去呢，还是不过去呢？妈妈不在身边，怎么办啊？”小马想着，就回过头去朝后望。他希望这时候妈妈跑来就好了。
　　可是他没有看到妈妈的影子，他只看见老牛伯伯在河边吃草。于是小马连忙“嘀嗒嘀嗒”地跑过去，问牛伯伯：
　　“牛伯伯，请你告诉我，我能过河去吗？”
　　牛伯伯回答说：
　　“水很浅哪。还不到我的小腿那么深，怎么不能过去呢。”
　　小马听了，立刻就朝小河跑去。
　　“喂！慢点跑，慢点跑！”
　　咦！是谁在说话呢？
　　小马停住脚抬头一看，原来是一只小松鼠。
　　小松鼠蹲在一棵大松树上，摇着大尾巴，对小马说：
　　“小马，你可别听老牛的话。水很深，一下水就会淹死的！”
　　小马问松鼠：
　　“你怎么知道水很深呢？”
　　小松鼠说：
　　“我怎么不知道呢。昨天，我们的一个同伴过河，就给大水冲跑了！”
　　小马说：
　　“那么牛伯伯为什么说水很浅呢？”
　　小松鼠说：
　　“浅？浅，怎么会把我们的同伴冲跑了呢？你可别听老牛的话！”
　　小河里的水到底是深呢，还是浅呢？小马没有主意了。
　　“唉！还是回家去问问妈妈吧。”小马甩了甩尾巴，“的的嗒嗒”地又往家里跑。
　　妈妈看见小马回来了，奇怪地问：
　　“咦！你怎么就回来了呢？”
　　小马很难为情地说：
　　“河里的水很深，过……过不去。……”
　　妈妈说：
　　“怎么会很深呢？昨天小驴叔叔还到河那边驮了好几趟柴呢。他说河水只齐到他肚子那儿，很浅。”
　　“是这样……老牛伯伯也说水很浅。他说只到他小腿那儿……”
　　“那么你为什么不过去呢？”
　　“可是……松鼠说……水很深，昨天，他的一个同伴过河，给河水冲走了。”
　　“那么到底是深呢，还是浅呢？你仔细想过他们说的话吗？”
　　“想了一下，可是没有仔细想，不知道他们俩谁说得对。”
　　妈妈笑了。妈妈说：
　　“你现在仔细想想看：牛伯伯有多高多大，小松鼠又有多高多大；你再把小松鼠和你自己比一比；你有多高多大，小松鼠又有多高多大，你就知道能不能过河了。”
　　小马听了妈妈的话，高兴得跳起来。他说：
　　“明白了，明白了，河里水不深，我过得去。唉！我刚才怎么不仔细想想呢！”
　　小马说着，就连蹦带跳地朝河边跑去。
　　小马一口气跑到河边，立刻跳到水里。河水刚好齐到小马的膝盖，不像老牛伯伯说的那么浅，也不像小松鼠说的那么深。
　　小马背着麦子，很快活地蹚着水，“扑通扑通”地过了河，到磨房去了。
